Thank you for entering your oil in the New York International Olive Oil Competition (NYIOOC) — the world’s premier olive oil contest. Please read the following rules carefully. If you have questions, please contact NYIOOC via email or live chat, or call (1) 401 846 2900 (09:00-16:30 New York time).
ELIGIBILITY – Extra virgin olive oils produced in the competition crop year and submitted by individual producers, producers’ associations and authorized distributors may be entered for the competition. Flavored or infused oils are not eligible.
ONLINE REGISTRATION – All contestants must fill out the online entry form. Upon completion of payment, you will receive via email an entry confirmation and packing document to include with your shipment of oil samples.
During registration, you will have the option to prepay for the shipping of your samples to NYIOOC via our courier, UPS. By using our courier account, you can confirm and track your shipment, and you will receive a special NYIOOC discounted rate.
ENTRY FEE – The cost to enter the contest is $275 before January 1, 2017. After January 1, the cost is $300. All payments must be made online using Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover. Entree fees are non-refundable.
SAMPLES – Every sample must be submitted in its normal retail packaging and brand label. Below are the required sample amounts for each oil entered:

If your bottles are 250 ML, send 3 samples.
If your bottles are 375 ML, send 3 samples.
If your bottles are 500 ML, send 3 samples.
If your bottles are 750 ML, send 3 samples.
If your bottles are 1000 ML, send 3 samples.
DEADLINE – Samples must be received between February 1, 2017 and April 21, 2017.
BROKEN SAMPLES – You are responsible for packing your samples in such a way to prevent breakage during transit. If you samples are received at the NYIOOC facility broken, you will be notified and asked to resend the samples at your own expense. The NYIOOC Shipping Option does not include a second shipment to replace breakage.
SHIPPING AND RECEIVING – NYIOOC is not responsible for any customs charges. Shipping costs are not refundable.
You will be able to download the shipping manifest and other documentation to include with your samples shipment right from your Producer Tools dashboard. If you chose to use the NYIOOC Shipping Service, you will also be provided with a UPS shipping label.
The NYIOOC warehouse is climate controlled and secure. Once your samples are received by NYIOOC, you will receive a confirmation by email.
Samples will be masked with opaque wrapping and assigned a random code.
INTENSITY – The competition categories are divided into delicate, medium and intense. Oils are assigned to a category of intensity based on the sensory assessment by t he judging panel.
CERTIFICATION – Organic entries must be accompanied by organic certification. If certification is not provided before the deadline, the oil will be judged in the non-organic category.
The New York International Olive Oil Competition recognizes the world’s best olive oils that are produced in quantities to reach a significant number of consumers. Therefore it is recommended, but not required, that participants produce a batch of at least 1,000 liters of the same oil as the submitted sample.
NYIOOC will not be responsible to the for any loss or damage to the submitted samples whatsoever, while in NYIOOC’s possession prior to or during the competition. In the event of loss or damage to the entry, while in the possession of NYIOOC prior to or during the competition, the entrant will be required to submit a replacement sample at their own expense.
DECISIONS ARE FINAL – The results of the judging panel and NYIOOC President are final. At the discretion of the NYIOOC, you may or may not receive a summary of the judges’ assessment of your sample beyond whether it won or did not win. NYIOOC does not provide consultations to producers to improve the quality of their products.
RESULTS – The results shall be announced and certified only by the president of the New York International Olive Oil Competition. The winners may mention their accomplishment on labels of the extra virgin olive oils from the same batch as the winning sample. All results are final.
PUBLICITY – Acceptance of an award constitutes permission for NYIOOC, Olive Oil Times and its affiliates to use winner's name, residence, recording of winner's voice and likeness for advertising and promotional purposes without compensation, unless otherwise prohibited by law.
EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY – NYIOOC takes no responsibility for the loss of awards due to incorrect or imprecise contact details provided by an entrant. NYIOOC makes no representations or warranties as to the quality/suitability/merchantability of any of the goods/services offered as awards.
NYIOOC shall not be liable for any loss or damage suffered or sustained (including but not limited to consequential loss, loss of revenue, loss of profit or economic loss), including for personal injury or property damage suffered or sustained, as a result of accepting any award or participation in the competition or award, except for any liability which cannot be excluded by law.
A person or company who enters the competition releases from and indemnifies NYIOOC from and against all liability, cost, loss or expense arising out of acceptance of any prize, award or participation in the competition including (but not limited to) personal injury and damage to property and whether direct, indirect, consequential, foreseeable, due to some negligent act or omission, or otherwise.
A winner (or his or her guests/parent/guardian as appropriate) may be required to sign and return any liability release provided by the NYIOOC and/or its contractors as a condition of the prize being awarded. Failure to return the signed releases and indemnities will result in the entitlement to the award being forfeited and a selection of another winner.
OWNERSHIP OF ENTRIES –
Ownership in all entries (whether in written, audio or visual form, or a combination of those) are assigned to NYIOOC upon submission and remain the property of the NYIOOC.
RETURN OF SAMPLES – Submitted samples become the property of NYIOOC. No samples will be returned before, during or after the competition.
NYIOOC is not responsible for lost, interrupted communications or unavailable network server or other connections, failed telephone, mid-delivery or computer transmissions or other errors of any kind, whether human, mechanical or electronic.
NYIOOC assumes no responsibility for any error, defect, delay, theft or unauthorized access to or alteration of entries. Subject to any written directions given under the applicable law, if for any reason, the competition is not capable of operating as planned, including infection by computer viruses, tampering, unauthorised intervention, fraud or any other causes beyond the control of the NYIOOC which corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, or proper conduct of the competition, then NYIOOC reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend this competition. NYIOOC reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual or company.
AWARD LABELS – Winners will be permitted to order adhesive labels only through the NYIOOC Producer Tools website. Winning producers are permitted to affix the award logo labels only to bottles containing the same oil (same harvest, olive varieties and production batch) and in the same packaging as the winning sample. Any other use of NYIOOC award logos or the NYIOOC logo is strictly prohibited. If you have a question about acceptable uses please contact the support team.
TROPHIES – Award trophies are not included in the entry fee. Trophies can be ordered by verified winners on the Producer Tools website after the competition.
